Electrician Costs in Cambridge (2026)
Planning ranges for residential electrical work in Cambridge and North Dumfries in 2026, and a straight account of why a stone house in Galt and a new build off Franklin get different numbers for the same request. None of this is a price. Every job is quoted in writing after the contractor has seen the panel.
Two Cambridge homeowners can ask for the same thing and be quoted figures that differ by a factor of three, and both quotes can be fair. A hot tub circuit in a 2012 house off Saginaw is a panel with room, a run across an unfinished basement ceiling and a disconnect on a new deck. The same hot tub behind an 1880s brick house in old Preston is a fused service that has to be upgraded first, a route around a stone foundation, and a panel that has to be made right before anything new can hang off it. The number follows the house, not the request. So the table below is organised by what the contractor has to do, and the notes beside each line say what tends to move it.
How to read these figures
They are planning ranges, and nothing more. Not a rate card, not a quote, not a promise. They are before HST, assume a Cambridge or North Dumfries property in fair condition, and include the contractor's work of filing the ESA notification where the job needs one. They do not include the charger, the generator, the light fixtures, the gas contractor on a standby system, anything GrandBridge Energy charges, or any building permit from the city or the township. Your written quote, after the panel has been seen, replaces all of them.

ESA's notification and inspection fees are set by the Electrical Safety Authority, differ by the type of work and are revised from time to time, so they are a separate line on the quote rather than a guess here. Anything GrandBridge Energy charges on a service change, and the gas contractor's work on a standby generator, are shown the same way.
Why the old cores cost more
Almost every figure in the table has a high end that belongs to Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. The reasons are physical. Solid stone and brick exterior walls mean the service entrance can only go where the wall allows and new exterior receptacles are surface work. Plaster-and-lath ceilings mean every opening is planned and patched. Blown-in insulation over knob-and-tube means slow, careful attic work. Three generations of panels chained together mean the panel must be rebuilt before a single new circuit is added. And a ground that went to a water pipe long since replaced with plastic means grounding is rebuilt on every panel job. In a designated heritage district, add the time to agree with the city where a mast or meter base may go.
Why rural jobs cost what they do
On the North Dumfries properties the figure is driven by distance and by what already exists. A feeder to a shop is priced by the metre of trench and the size of conductor the distance requires. A generator system is priced by how much of the house it has to carry and whether the panel has to be rebuilt to accept a transfer switch. Pole-top equipment the owner is responsible for, outbuildings grounded badly or not at all, and well pumps on circuits that were never meant for them all get corrected because ESA will not accept the work otherwise. The trade-off is that access is usually easy and there is room to work.
Where the figure comes down
Doing related work in one visit: a panel swap, aluminum re-termination and new lighting under one notification cost less than three separate trips. Rewiring rooms a renovation has already opened. Choosing the fix the assessment supports rather than the largest one on offer: re-termination instead of a rewire, a subpanel or load management instead of a service upgrade, a manual transfer switch instead of an automatic standby system where outages are rare, a partial knob-and-tube replacement where the rest is already dead. And simple access on the day: a clear panel, an attic hatch that opens, a marked trench route.
Before you accept any electrical quote in Cambridge
Confirm the business holds an ECRA/ESA licence and check the seven-digit number with ESA, because only a licensed contractor can lawfully be hired. Confirm the contractor files the ESA notification under their own licence; a quote that leaves it to you, or claims none is needed for a panel, a charger or a generator, is a quote to refuse. Ask to see the load calculation for anything that adds a large load. Insist on an itemised scope, because one figure cannot be compared with another. Make sure GrandBridge coordination is included where the service changes and that utility and ESA fees are shown separately. Ask who patches the openings. And ask for proof of liability insurance and WSIB coverage from everyone, including this contractor.
The Electrical Safety Authority sets out how to verify a licence and what the notification is for. Consumer Protection Ontario describes what a written home-services contract must include. Building permits for an additional residential unit, addition, finished basement or new outbuilding come from the City of Cambridge or North Dumfries Township under Ontario's Building Code.
Frequently asked questions
What does a service upgrade cost in a Cambridge century home?
As a planning range, taking a fused service in a Galt, Preston or Hespeler century home to a 200-amp breaker service โ mast or lateral, meter base, panel, grounding, GrandBridge Energy's disconnect and reconnect and ESA's review โ commonly falls between $4,200 and $9,000 before HST in 2026. Stone walls, chained old panels and heritage siting push it toward the top. It is a planning figure, not a quote.
What does a standby generator installation cost?
The electrical side of a manual transfer switch with an outdoor inlet for a portable generator plans around $1,200 to $2,800. The electrical side of an automatic standby system โ transfer switch, feeders, the GrandBridge service layout โ plans around $3,000 to $7,500. The generator unit itself, the pad and the gas or propane connection by a TSSA-registered contractor are separate.
What does knob-and-tube replacement cost in Cambridge?
It has the widest spread of anything here because it depends entirely on how much is live. An assessment is a few hundred dollars and is credited if a rewire is booked. One floor of a plaster house is often $5,000 to $14,000; a whole two-storey stone or brick house with the service and panel is commonly $15,000 to $36,000. If a renovation is opening the walls, it is far less.
Are ESA and GrandBridge fees included?
The contractor's time to file the notification and coordinate the utility is included. ESA's own fees and anything GrandBridge Energy charges are set by those bodies and change, so they are itemised on the written quote rather than absorbed into a range here. HST is additional.
Why does the same job cost more in Galt than in the north end?
Because in the old core most of the labour is getting cable to where it needs to go: through plaster and lath, around a solid stone wall, past insulation over knob-and-tube, with no attic hatch and a panel that must be corrected before anything can be added. A 2012 house with open joists and a 200-amp panel has none of that.
Can you give a price over the phone?
We can say which kind of job you are describing and which planning range it probably falls in. A firm figure needs someone to see the panel, the service and the route. A photo of the panel with the cover on, the approximate age of the house and, for rural work, the distance to the outbuilding get the conversation most of the way there.
