Electrical in Galt
Electrical work for Galt, the largest of Cambridge's three former towns, from the stone houses of Dickson Hill and the river streets to the post-war neighbourhoods east of the Grand.
Galt is where Cambridge's stone is. The limestone and granite houses on Dickson Hill, along Grand Avenue and Blenheim Road and through the streets behind the downtown were built by the town's mill-owning families in the nineteenth century, and the brick and frame houses around them filled in through the early twentieth. Dickson Hill and the Main Street block downtown are designated heritage conservation districts, and a plan for a wider Galt Core district has been before council. Electrically the old core shares one profile: small services, often still fused, knob-and-tube in the interior partitions and ceilings, exterior receptacles added later in surface conduit because the outside walls are solid masonry, and a basement with two or three generations of panels bolted to the stone. The work begins with an assessment of what is live and in what condition, then usually a new 200-amp service with GrandBridge Energy's disconnect and reconnect and ESA's review, with the mast and meter base positioned in consultation with the city's heritage staff where the property is designated. Lighting in these houses is a matter of judgement: plaster medallions and cornices often argue against pot lights and for fixtures that suit the room. East of the Grand, the 1960s and 70s streets off Dundas and Franklin and in Christopher-Champlain have aluminum branch wiring in the earlier houses and full 100-amp panels in all of them, so re-termination and same-amperage panel swaps are common. Galt's downtown also carries a share of apartments over shops and houses divided into units, where additional-residential-unit permits, interconnected alarms and a second kitchen's load bring the service question to the front.

Frequently asked questions
Where in and around Cambridge do you work?
All three of the city's former towns and the neighbourhoods between them, plus Blair, and North Dumfries Township out to Ayr, Branchton and Roseville. Travel is written into the quote; there is no mileage surprise on the day.
Is anything different about rural jobs in North Dumfries?
The electrical rules are provincial, so the ESA notification and review are the same as in the city, and GrandBridge Energy is the utility on both sides of the line. Building permits for a shop, a barn or a detached unit go through North Dumfries Township rather than Cambridge. Overhead services, long feeders, well pumps and generator connections get more attention in the quote because they are more of the job.
Do you work on designated heritage properties?
Yes, and the contractor knows which parts of Galt, Blair and Dickson Hill are in a heritage conservation district. The wiring inside is governed by ESA like any other house; the position of a new mast, meter base or exterior fixture on a visible wall is checked with the city's heritage staff before it is ordered.
